About this Item

Contents Preface. 1. Genealogies of Asia India and the nationalist vision of Asia Japan and Asia in the modern world/Brij Tankha. 2. China's construction of Asia/Madhavi Thampi. Notes. In certain quarters it is fashionable to refer to the present century as an Asian one. In the years since the end of the second world war Asia in particular East Asia and parts of South east Asia have seen extra ordinary economic growth. However even as Asia has become integrated to west centric global systems dialogues between Asian neighbours have been rather limited. And attempts at understanding Asia from Asian perspectives remain rather limited. In this book two Indian scholars of Asia look at the idea of Asia as it emerged in Indian Japanese and Chinese minds. The interface between European expansion and a somewhat laidback Asia resulted in a lot of rethinking and conceptualising in Asian minds. This book traces the emergence of an idea of Asia from pre modern to modern times in leading thinkers in the three major civilisations of the continent. Brij Tankha tries to go beyond the idea that Asia is a colonial construction. He looks at the way ideas about the region are a complex of pre modern and modern developments. While Asia is in many ways a colonial construction an earlier genealogy also continues to find expression. These earlier notions have fed into and formed the basis of the modern uses of Asia so that it has become a sign to mark a way to resist the colonial onslaught as well as the basis for an emerging regional identity. In a sense Asia is an idea still in the period of formation. Tankha's essay examines ideas of Asia among Indian thinkers like Swami Vivekananda Sri Aurobindo Jawaharlal Nehru and K.M. Panikkar and he sees how ideas of Asia were used to define India's mission in the world. In the second section of his essay he looks at premodern sources of Japan's idea of Asia and how this was deployed in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to justify Japan's colonial aggression as well as used to resist western colonial domination. Madhavi Thampi looks at the evolution of the Chinese construction of Asia with the focus on the crucial century from mid nineteenth to mid twentieth when China's perception of Asia took definite shape. The first part of the essay covers a long historical period and looks at relations of the Chinese empire with the different parts of the region and the way in which these were reflected in the traditional literature. The following part details China's rediscovery of the region particularly maritime Asia in the context of growing western dominance. The essay concludes with reflections on how the people's Republic of China has perceived Asia. To anyone interested in Asia this book will serve as a lucid introduction to Asian ideas about the continent. 130 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 65639
