About this Item

Full brown leather over wood with ornate inlaid pictures and patterns, bearing faint portraits, floral scrollwork and designs. Text block measures 5 1/2 by 3 3/4 inches. 485 pp (including title page), plus a colophon on the verso of page 485. 2 blank rear endpapers. No front endpapers. Decorative title page. All text in Latin. A collection of poetry on various subjects, but primarily relating to love and the art of love. The 'Arte Amandi,' and its follow up, 'Remedio Amoris,' both provide Ovid's views and opinions on relationships between men and women, writing in verse on both starting and maintaining relationships (for both men and women), as well as referring, albeit indirectly and through euphemisms, to sexual relations. Much of the work refers to figures and episodes in ancient mythology, including Penelope, Ulysses, Orestes, Achilles, Helen, Paris and others. Printed in Basel by Heinrich Petri, the son of the noted printer Adam Petri. GOOD condition. Leather chipped, with about an inch of loss at the head of the spine. A 1/2 inch area of loss of leather along the upper front hinge, some chipping and loss to the corners and along the extremities, including minor loss of wood at the upper right front corner. Several small areas of worming to the leather on the rear cover. Minor scuffing and uneven darkening. Two clasps/straps were apparently once present at the fore edge, but are now missing. Writing present on the inside front cover and title page, with scattered notes throughout, as well as scattered underlining, sometimes heavy, throughout. Some dampstaining affecting the gutter and lower interior margins of the first 35 pages. Minor scattered soiling, staining and foxing throughout. Bookseller Inventory # 008502
