Firts edition. Three-quarter vellum over marbeled paper-covered boards, red leather spine label stamped in gilt and with spine decorated in gilt. (xv) 201 pps. 10 plates of engraved diagrams. Frontis portrait of Read is lacking though tissue guard is present. Extremely scarce work describing the life and work of Nathan Read, whose mechanical inventions of steam power systems for steamboats and railroads were vitally important to the development of the modern transportation systems of the 19th century. Presumably a deluxe or presentation binding. A tight, internally clean copy, the vellum lightly soiled and some minor scuffing to the spine lable, scuffing to the marbled paper of the boards.
