About this title

Synopsis:

Poems deal with birth, parenthood, the sea, poets, love, beauty, mortality, justice, religion, and exploration

From Library Journal:

Coming fast on the heels of the Complete Poems ( LJ 1/88), these "supplementary poems" show that the seminal and prolific Olson still has something for the reader to digest. Some of these poems are variations of earlier ones; others--many of them youthful works--have never seen print. Does this uneven volume add anything to the established corpus? Butterick admits to having excluded some of Olson's lesser efforts, but it seems not enough was excluded. Still, the book does pick up as the page numbers rise, and it can make many poetry collections today seem marginal. Animated by both a strong sense of literature and an innate feel for the "archaic," Olson's poetry involves the reader with both the present and the mythic past.
