About this Item

This hardcover book, between 8vo and quarto in size, is the 1906-1907 catalog of the National Park Seminary, a finishing school for young ladies which operated in a campus of impressive architectural variety adjacent to Rock Creek Park, "Eighteen minutes by Baltimore & Ohio express trains from Washington, D.C.", though the proprietors are at pains to guarantee that, due to the school's impressive elevation at 400 feet, "malaria is impossible here." The theater looks like a Greek temple, and competitions were held for the design of the sorority houses, one of which looks like a Japanese pagoda, another being built in the California mission style, etc. Come WWII the campus was bought up by Walter Reed Hospital as a restful, wooded campus for the rehabilitation of soldiers with serious war wounds. Condition of this book is good only, with some water stains to paper coverings of the boards, and the top inch of the spine mangled. Interior pages remain lovely, and constitute a wonderful time capsule of drawings and photographs of the various building interiors, resembling a resort hotel of the era. The curriculum stresses English literature, diction, deportment, and preparing the young ladies to make their way in the world "if such should prove necessary," though whether that means "should daddy's millions disappear in a crash" or "should an eligible suitor not show up as early as hoped" is not made clear. At any rate, some courses in bookkeeping, typing, stenography and library science were offered. Admission was only to young women whose good character could be certified by a "letter from their minister," of course. The most curious thing about this catalog is that it appears to set no age limit for admission, nor even make it clear whether the school was intended to be a college or a preparatory school -- though the proprietors do "plead that you do not rush your daughters through school. It is no special honor to graduate young. . . ." Tuition and academic admission requirements also not specified, nor is there any mention of the availability of scholarship aid. There does appear to have been a basket-ball team, and "Our physical training is supplemented with informal individual talks upon the laws of healthful living. In all the talks a distinctly womanly future is pre-supposed and plainly discussed, and is made the incentive of a delicate and reverential regard for the high destiny of woman." In the house . . . but not in the Senate? 128 pp. Reduced from $40. Bookseller Inventory # 002655
