About this title

In September 1993, President Clinton signed into law an act known popularly as "National Service," which provides the opportunity for students to perform community service and earn education awards in return for this service. This guide offers information about the law and regulations and program administration, as well as a directory of state contacts and programs. Presented in a three-ring binder. Available as a set with School-to-Work Programs for $85. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

From Booklist:

The National Community Service Act, passed by Congress in 1993, provides opportunities for students to perform community service and earn money for college. This guide could not have come at a better time as the program, known as AmeriCorps, was just launched this fall.

The guide begins with an informative introduction that covers such areas as what national service is, how it is organized, who is eligible, and the application procedure. The work is divided into four sections. Section 1 reprints laws and regulations relevant to the program that list and define the various types of service programs. Subsequent chapters in section 1 deal with participants and how they are chosen, how educational awards are made, and so on. The section ends with information on the various appropriations for the program. Section 2 concerns itself with the administration of the program, dealing with issues of training, selection criteria, and applications, with emphasis on the subject areas of various programs. This information was reprinted from Principles of High Quality National Service Programs: The Corporation for National and Community Service (January 1994).

Section 3 is a useful directory of state contacts and programs, which includes the name of the lead contact for the state and information about the funding and number of programs being run in each state. Section 4 begins with a listing of examples of service activities and skills, followed by a detailed index to the laws and regulations. The guide comes in loose-leaf format so that it can be amended as laws and regulations are amended and as new programs are approved by the states.

This volume will be useful in high-school and college libraries as well as public libraries.
