Description:

Book. Extremely rare, yearbook-like hardbound photo-rich directory of performers and producers of Vaudeville at its zenith, along with other advertisements and informational pieces. Here you will find photos of stars such as Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, Harry Langdon, Smith and Dale (the basis for Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys", Eva Tanguay, Dainty June, aka as June Havoc, the younger sister of Gypsy Rose Lee. The full page photo of Dainty June confirms that she was indeed a big headliner in Vaudeville as a child. Also here are photos of performers who would become big, big stars such as Jack Benny and Burns and Allen. Most of the stars, of course, are long forgotten. And there are photos of the producers, or men such as Edward Albee's father, who ran the Keith Circuit, and the Loews brothers, who were to organize MGM around this time. Some photos are full page, and a good number are in color, although the majority are black and white. Perhaps the most fun are illustrations of such things as "Singers Midgets" -- these are in color. Ads include a color one for Cadillac with a glamorous illustrated backdrop of Grand Army Plaza at the corner of Central Park depicting the Vanderbilt and Whitney Mansions, soon to be razed and replaced by Bergdorf Goodman. Lots of information about finances, statistics, etc. scattered throughout. Unpaginated, but probably about 400 pages in all. Bound in a faux leatyher with blindstamped lettering and emblem and border decoration. Quarto measuring 12.25 by 9 inches. Very good or better with some discreet notes probably by original owner who was a performer and noted in some of the early pages people he had performed with. Bookseller Inventory #
