About this Item

Pp. xviii, (1), 1-524; xxi, 1-1080, (1), errata sheet laid in at rear; 3 large folding maps (1 in color), 16 fine color plates (after water-color paintings), 41 full page black-and-white plates, 196 text-figures. Publisher's original highly decorated blue cloth, lettered in silver on the spine with ten red panel lines, front cover lettered in red and with ten red vertical bands and elaborate gilt decorations in the center, in the original thick cardboard slipcases lettered in black on the front cover of each case, sm 4to (10 1/4 inches x 7 1/2 inches). The rare first edition of this monumental work on the birds of Japan emphasizing the Palearctic species. As this book was published at the beginning of WWII, few copies of the second volume, issued in 1941, were ever shipped out of Japan. The text is in Japanese with Latin names of birds used throughout. From the research library of ornithologist Oliver L. Austin (past Director of the Austin Ornithological Research Center in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and past Curator of Ornithology at the Florida Museum of Natural History), with his rectangular Japanese/English name-stamp seal on the front endpaper of each volume; the second volume is warmly inscribed by the Yoshimaro Yamashina to O. L. Austin on the front endpaper. An interesting association copy of a rare Asian ornithological work. See also Ripley, p. 318 and Trinity College, p. 263. A bright and clean copy in near fine condition in the original lightly browned and rubbed slipcases. Bookseller Inventory # 5709
