Only three volumes were published in this series. In the Preface to the 1869 volume, the editors announced that they would change the format and include illustrations in an effort to attract a broader public. In addition to providing a rich sampling of the Victorian fascination with natural history, these books contain many references to the Americas, including accounts of Borax Lake and the cultivation of oranges and lemons in California, and descriptions of the behavior of beavers and the reptiles of the Mississippi.
