Description:

9" x 5.5". 72pp., plus four folding plates. Bound into later card stock boards. The original covers are not bound in, else nice VG+ condition. This government report includes much text on navigability of the Tennessee, commerce on the river, the waterway's geography, various engineers' reports, the river's tributaries, water power, and more. The plates are printed in color. Two depict the Muscle Shoals Canal, and the other two depictsthe proposed intercoastal canal and a chart showing the relative accessibility to tide water of the Tennessee River and Pennsylvania coal and iron fields. Book Description U. S. Government, Washington, D. C., 1879. Soft Cover. Condition: Good +. The Second Session of the 45th U.S. Congress was held December 3, 1877 through June 20, 1878. This eleven-page pamphlet written by Capt. John Cowdon proposing improvements as described in the title was "Referred to the Committee on the Levees of the Mississippi River and ordered to be printed on June 19, 1878." Cowdon's report includes a history of the area with regard to rainfall, currents, depths, outlets and crevasses, the levee system, etc., along with his conclusions and proposals. Pamphlet is printed on plain white (age-yellowed) paper bound at the left side with a 4 1/2" long string that is tied on the inside; pamphlet is bent in three places (horizontally) but not creased, text has some chips and small tears, mostly along the bottom back edge, and several small stains/smudges but still very readable.
