About this Item

Batavia, H.M. van Dorp, 1859. Titlep. (printed on porcelain- or glazed paper), XVI, 300 pp. Orig. gilt-decorated blue cloth. Sm. 8vo. (traces of wear to binding, but still acceptable). * Rare literary almanac published in Batavia in 1859. The 'Nederlandsch-Indische Muzenalmanak' was the successor of the literary yearbook 'Warnasarie', which had appeared between 1848 and 1849. It contents are a mixture of prose and poetry - largely related to the Indies - by various authors. The editor L.J.A. Tollens (son of the well-known dutch poet H. Tollens) is represented with the poems 'Makassaarsch Minnelied' and 'Madureesche wraak', and there are contributions by S. van Deventer (' Weeklacht bij het vertrek van mijn oudsten zoon van Java naar Nederland'), I.J.J. Snellebrand ('Java, een Lied'), E.A.L.B. van Hoëvell ('Bezoek in een grot, op het eiland Noesakembangan'), etc. No more volumes were published. See on L.J.A. Tollens and these literary almanacs Nieuwenhuys' Oost-Indische Spiegel, pp.123-127. Bookseller Inventory # 003944
