About the Author: Steven J. Isaacs, PE, Associate AIA, is a division manager in the Architecture and Engineering Services Division with FMI Corporation. He has forty years of experience leading design and construction firms and major engineering, architecture and planning projects throughout the United States and overseas. He created the Effective Negotiations program, which has taught thousands of professionals in the design and construction industry how to effectively apply interest-based negotiations in ways that best utilize their unique talents. He assists firms to improve their practice in the areas of overall organization and management, strategic long term planning, financial controls, project performance and profitability, negotiation, staff mentoring and development, leadership transition, joint ventures and partnering. Steve has presented many national and regional industry conferences on a variety of subjects. He utilizes scenario planning as a key component of strategic planning in his work with firms. Steve received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the City College of New York and a Masters in Transportation Planning and Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York. He designed and teaches courses in the project management and leadership of architectural, engineering and planning firms and in successful negotiation. He has been an officer in the Professional Services Management Association, and a speaker at many industry conferences, including the American Institute of Architects national convention, ACEC national and local meetings, SEOC, Project Management Institute and ASCE. Steve has been teaching and consulting in the design industry for over a decade. His career in practice includes serving as President of SmithGroup California. Prior to the merger with SmithGroup, he was CEO and President of Stone Marraccini & Patterson (SMP) an international multi-office architectural and planning practice with over 150 employees. He held several positions in SMP including Managing Director of the San Francisco office and Chief Financial Officer. He also served as Managing Principal for a diversity of architecture and engineering commissions. Prior to that, Steve worked for a decade with Bechtel Incorporated in a variety of locations worldwide, including: - AMTRACK NE Corridor Improvement Project - Boston MBTA Redline Extension Project - King Fahd International Airport, Dammam, Saudi Arabia - Initial Phase, Baltimore Rapid Transit System - Preliminary Studies for San Juan Rapid Transit System, Puerto Rico Before joining Bechtel, Mr. Isaacs was the Assistant Director of Planning for the New York City Department of Highways. Mr. Isaacs is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York and an Associate of the AIA.
