About this title

Synopsis:

Neil Welliver is well-known for his skill at capturing the intimate beauties of the Maine landscape on canvas. His huge oil paintings have been called "among the strongest im modern American art" by critic Robert Hughes. But Welliver's talent as a printmaker is less celebrated. In this book, for the first time, the artist's prints—and his process—are given the attention they deserve. Welliver's prints, like his paintings, are a blend of rusticity and sophistication.

About the Author:

For more than twenty years, Welliver has lived and painted in rural Maine. He studied at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art and at Yale University, and has taught at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. Combining his rigorous academic training with his explorations of the Maine wilderness, Welliver uses the media of etching, woodblock, lithography, and screenprinting to create an intuitive yet precise vision of the wild world that surrounds him.
