About this Item

This is not a copy for reading, but for the interested collector. Binding is broken and while all pages (except the partial FFEP which is laid-in) are attached, some are only held by a few binding threads. Most damage to first signature of pages, with the binding becoming more secure the farther back you go. Pages are finger smudged, but illustrations are clean. Boards are half grey with silver and blue embossed filigree, half blue with dark blue embossed filigree. Rubbing, surface chipping and age darkening to boards, silver on spine is mostly faded, but visible. Inscribed "Christmas 1893/ My Dear Jesse/ From Papa" and below that in red ink (in a different, more modern hand) a lengthy note explaining that "Jesse" is the granddaughter of Stephen Foster, who had one child, Marion, who married Walter Welch and bore Jesse. We can verify that the family history mentioned is accurate, but have no way to verify the veracity of the handwriting from the original inscription. We are located in the same county in which Marion Foster grew up, taught and raised her family, so its certainly plausible. Photos provided upon request. Bookseller Inventory # 34411

Formerly Eljay's Books, Rickert & Beagle Books is still a weird little bookshop! Eljay's owner Chris Rickert teamed up with Fantasy author Peter S Beagle to keep the store open when her partners retired and this is the result! We carry new and used books of all kinds, but our focus is on Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror novels. We carry a large selection of mass market paperback Mystery, Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy books, but we only have the rarest titles in these sections listed online so feel free to call if you're looking for a specific mass market title!
