About this Item

The Dun Mountain Railway, serving mines to the east of Nelson is now recognised as the first railway in NZ. In 1987 the author completed an earlier book on this rai way and the passenger (bus) service that operated on the same line. Subsequently, much more material on the same topics became available and this second book resulted, providing an important addition to New Zealand's transport history. The railway was also a challenging engineering exercise, traversing some very rugged country. Horse-power was used on the rail and Johnston's book also covers the hourse drawn passenger services on the rail and within the Nelson urban area. Pictorial card covers NF, ditto the text block, author's signature on title page. 104 pages, b/w photos throughout, plus drawings, plans, map, diagrams. Size: 24cm by 17.5cm.
