Covers scuffed, else a very good copy in orig. embossed cloth. Part 1, Melanospermaeae only. Parts II Rhodospermaeae appeared in1853 and Part III Chlorospermeae in 1857. Includes 12 stunning color lithorgraphic plates done by the London firm of ford and George showing 32 specimens of algae in beautiful detail. William Henry Harvey (1811-1866) was Keeper of the Herbarium at the University of Dublin and Professor of Botany to the Royal Dublin Society. By the age of 15 he was already fascinated with the study of algae. He was recognized as an expert on algae and mosses and wrote the standard work, Phycologia Britannica. His collection survives today in the herbarium of Trinity College Dublin. Laid in are three samples of labelled dried sea moss collected in Santa Cruz, Calif. An important work on marine algae.
