About this Item

London: Humphry Milford, Oxford University Press, 1936. Hardcover Frontispiece, viii, 178 pp, 1 leaf; illus. Original cloth, slight wear, label removed from spine. Yale University Library bookplate and withdrawal stamp, some offsetting from bookplate. Very Good. First Edition. "The addresses published here were delivered as a part of the ceremony which followed the formal opening of the Montreal Neurological Institute by the Chancellor, Sir Edward Beatty, for McGill University on September 27, 1934. Biographical sketches of the lives of leaders of neurological thought are now added. These lives were written by members of the staff of the Institute during the year which preceded its opening in the hope that clearer insight into the future of neurology might be gained by thoughtful study of its past. This volume is printed for the staff as their record of the Institute's foundation. The building itself will no doubt serve a changing purpose under the control of our successors, but this book will continue as we leave it however deep the dust that falls upon it. W.P. (Wilder Penfield)" Harvey Cushing gave one of the foundation lectures, on neurosurgery; Wilder Penfield contributed a paper on "The significance of the Montreal Neurological Institute." Includes biographies of Hughlings Jackson, Sherrington, Charcot, Claude Bernard, Pavlov, Alzheimer, Golgi, Ramon y Cajal, Weir Mitchell and Cushing. Bookseller Inventory # 39429
