G & M says that this work appeared in two volumes, but clearly this was not the case. Edited (and completed) by A. Ninian Bruce. This set was published posthumously and comprises the final version of his overview of Neurology. Wilson was a leader in Neurology in England in his period. He was the first to describe hepatolenticular degeneration in his 1912 dissertation ("Progressive Lenticular Degeneration: A Familial Nervous Disease Associated with Cirrhosis of the Liver."). The disorder became known as "Wilson's disease". Wilson's Disease is a genetic disorder which causes copper to accumulate in tissues. The disease manifests itself in neurological or psychiatric symptoms and liver disease. It can sometimes be treated with medication, but if sufficiently advanced can only be treated with a liver transplant. The classic visual symptom is a brown ring on the edge of the iris. Book Description Classics of Neurology & Neurosurgery Library, Division of Gryphon Editions / Leslie B. Adams, Birmingham, AL, 1985. THREE VOLUME SET. LIMITED EDITION of 1000 COPIES. COPY No.822 of an important treatise in neurology by Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) - a French neurologist and professor of anatomical pathology. Although best known today for his work on hypnosis and hysteria, Charcot is also considered "the founder of modern neurology", and his name has been associated with at least 15 medical eponyms, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and Charcot disease. His work greatly influenced the developing fields of neurology and psychology, and modern psychiatry owes much to his and his direct followers' work. Charcot's "Lectures on the Diseases of the Nervous System", first published from 1872-1887, were translated into English by the New Sydenham Society and published as a three-volume set from 1877-1889, greatly advancing the knowledge and discrimination of nervous diseases. This special edition has been privately printed for the members of the Classics of Neuroloogy and Neurosurgery Library. Small 16-page booklet with Charcot's portrait pasted on front inner cover, is appended. From the library of Irvine M. Levine - an eminent American physician who discovered Levine-Critchley syndrome in 1960. [ALL VOLUMES]: 220x145mm. [XVI+327 pages] + [XVI+400 pages & 10 plates printed on 34 double pages] + [XVIII+438 pages]. Dark-green full-leather embossed Hardcover with gilt ribbed spine. Gilt cover and text-block edges. Marbled endpapers. Green cloth ribbon marker in-bound. Gilt leather sticker with previous owner's name and copy number on front endpaper. [VOL.III]: Spine upper edge slightly bumped. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare de-luxe limited edition of lectures on nervous disorders by "the father of French neurology and one of the world's pioneers of neurology", also known as "the Napoleon of the neuroses", is in very good condition.
