About this Item

errata leaf, plus 7 plates and 51 text wood engravings. Modern half-morocco over marbled boards; the interior of the first few signatures is soiled with a light waterstain running through the upper margins. From the library of J.W. Lloyd of Brook House with his signature on title. First edition. Ure felt that geologists were undermining the foundations of religion and morality, and attempts here to reconcile contemporary geological discoveries with the Mosaic account of creation. At a meeting of the Geological Society of London, Adam Sedgwick led a brutal attack on Ure, stating that he used information from other works without quoting or citing his sources. However, we found Ure to have quoted many of the contemporary geologists in this work. The plates represent fossil shells of the successive mineral strata with the generic and specific names according to Sowerby's nomenclature. A number of other illustrations are noted as delineated by Dr. Buckland.Ure (1778-1857) was a Scottish chemist and teacher of science to artisans. He was one of the first scientists to earn his living as a consultant. Ure published numerous papers; his most important were on the application of science to the arts and industry.
