About this Item

or, A geographical, historical, and commercial grammar; and present state of the several nations of the world. Containing. [XII]. To which are added, I. A geographical index. II. A table of coins of all nations. III. A chronological table of remarkable events. IV. The late discoveries of Herschell, and other astronomers. By William Guthrie, Esq. The astronomical parts corrected by Dr. Rittenhouse. In two volumes. . The First American edition, corrected, improved, and greatly enlarged.Volumes: 2. Thick 4tos. same paginations. The thin paper state with the bulk of the leaves in the first volume measuring 1 3/8" and the second volume measuring only 1 7/8". Full original calf, hinges worn but still firm, some ink stains and foxing. The American edition of Guthrie in quarto is a much finer work than the big quarto one published in London in 1795. Evans noted that it was Jedidiah Morse who edited the section on America, and David Rittenhouse corrected the astronomy. While the atlas of maps is a familiar work, and may have been available without buying the text, sets of the text volumes are not often met with. A distinguished piece of American erudition.
