About this Item

Small pocket New Testament, issued to a Civil War soldier, Pvt. Edson A. Welton of the 49th Massachusetts Volunteers. This regiment lost 2 officers and 28 Enlisted men who were killed or mortally wounded, as well as 84 Enlisted men by disease. Has a printed label, name & regiment filled in, which states, "E. A. Welton, Co. TK (?), 49th Regiment Mass. Volunteers. Presented by the Berkshire Co. Bible Society." Under this is handwritten, "At Pittsfield, Oct 28th 1862." On another front blank is scrawled in pencil, " Saved almost as much by human effort as by Divine Grace." This may have been written by a John Hitchcock, whose name, in pencil, appears on a rear blank. History of the Regiment: Organized at Pittsfield and mustered on October 28th 1862 [same date as written on the label at front], The Regiment moved to New York November 21, and provost duty there until Jan. 24 1863. Embarked for New Orleans, La., on Steamer "Illinois" January 24, arriving there February 3, thence moved to Carrollton and Baton Rouge. Attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 19th Army Corps, Dept of the Gulf, to August 1863. Wartime Service: Reconnoissance toward Port Hudson on March 13-20 1863. At Baton Rouge until May 18th. Operations against Port Hudson may 24-July 9. Moved to Donaldsonville July 9-10, and duty there until August 1. Action at Cox's Plantation, Donaldsonville, July 12-13. Moved to Baton Rouge August 1. Thence to Pittsfield, Mass august 8-21. Mustered out September 1, 1863. Binding is tight, aeg; leather missing off the spine and front cover. Back cover is not present. Text good, covers fair-poor. 2 3/8" X 3 3/4" size; meant to be carried with the soldier for comfort and instruction. I am not sure if this soldier survived the war. A unique pocket New Testament.
