About this Item

This is a book that has been compiled by, as shown by a stamp, "A. W. Oppenheim, Confederate Note Collector." The basic text was printed to commemorate the "Dedication of the New York State Monument on the Battlefield of Antietam" as stated in Gold on the dark red cloth cover. Inside, beginning at the inside front cover, numerous photos, articles, newspaper clippings have been pasted, as in a scrapbook. These clippings are pasted or taped into just about every available space throughout the book, but there is no way to tell where they came from or how old they are, although I think the bulk of the material was collected in the 40s (there are some that were obviously collected much later). . The Index of the actual book indicates that most of the text is about the history of Antietam, also the history of the monument - it is too extensive to copy here. The index of illustrations and maps lists 42 items. Enclosed in the book are also old brochures from historical sites, some pages that appear to have been taken from other books, at least a few are engavings from naval battles. The original text is sometimes annotated by the owner, generally to illuminate or correct the information.Because this book is so singular, I will gladly provide any additional information or photos upon request.
