About this Item

First edition. Text by Gilbert Millstein and photographs by Robert Frank. In this work, a promotional volume published by The New York Times, the Swiss-born Frank displayed his uncanny eye for the telling detail which pervades his best work and drew high praise from his collaborator at the time, Millstein, as an "adopted New Yorker who sees our city with eyes as wide and penetrating as his camera lens." Indeed, the photography in New York Is shows a kinship with those in his photographic masterwork, The Americans, which was published later that same year. Of that volume, Jack Kerouac wrote in his introductory piece, "Anybody who don't like these pitchers don't like poetry, see?" The spine of this copy is evenly darkened and the (white) boards show light dust soiling, else a near fine copy without printed dust jacket as issued. Bookseller Inventory # 0101
