1890-91. Half leather in black cloth. Each issue contains 16-18 pages, with 52 issues, plus 2 supplements present. Illustrations throughout. With one supplement bearing illustrations by Howard Pyle. Bidwell, with illustrations and maps, describing explorations on the Congo River in Africa, and the cultures and events encountered; "Five Years with the Congo Cannibals,' also by Henry Ward, describing and illustrating, in depth, the various cultures of the Congo; Egypt ancient and modern; the curious history of a deaf and dumb boy; An article mention that Native American Indians in Montana believe that the second coming of Christ has happened, with Christ being somewhere in the Big Horn Mountains; A midshipman's adventure on the coast of Africa by C.J. Messenger; 'A Matter of Millions' (complete) by Anna Katharine Green; Chinese Fairy Mythology; Palestine under the Moslems; Bismarck and Socialism; Why Native American Indians take scalps, by General J.S. Brisbin; Letters from Siberian Exiles by Leo Hartmann; 'My Brook' by James Russell Lowell, a supplement to the December 13th issue, featuring illustrations by Wilson de Meza; A short blurb in the January 3, 1891 issue on women physicians stating that the first woman doctor is said to be Elizabeth Blackwell; 'The Captain's Well' a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, with illustrations by Howard Pyle (supplement to the January 11th, 1890 issue, but bound at the rear. This may be a misprint or was included from the last issue of the previous year); literature, poems, science and other articles present throughout. GOOD condition. Leather very deteriorated along the hinges, leaving brownish residue when handled. Moderate to heavy fading, some scuffing and soiling to the covers. Extremities bumped and scuffed. Interior solid, with minor scattered soiling and staining. A few pages bearing tears. One page with a 2 inch hole in its lower portion, with loss of text in that area. Bookseller Inventory #
