History of police in New York from colonial days under the Dutch and English to the movement for a London-style police force in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the establishment of a regular police force before the Civil War, the Metropolitan Police Force after the Civil War, Theodore Roosevelt and the police (of which he was Commissioner for a time before he became Governor and later President), the years under Tammany control. There is an entire chapter devoted to the 1863 Draft Riots and the author deals as well with police relations with various immigrant groups, the development of standards inpolice work and the interaction between New York's political worlda nd the police force.
