About this Item

Large format newspaper. 8 pages. Newspaper featuring a lengthy account of the shipwreck of the Winchester out of Boston and subsequent rescue conducted by the mail steamship Washington. Also featured are several articles on slavery and the anti-slavery movement, including short pieces on Stephen Douglas and his advice and admonitions to the Christian Clergy, (William Lloyd) Garrison and his announcements at the American Anti-Slavery Society and a lengthy article on a night and day session of the House of Representatives debating the Nebraska Bill, quoting by telegraph, testimony and speeches from various members of the house. This bill became the Kansas-Nebraska Act a few weeks later, and repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. While originally written and sponsored by Stephen Douglas, the bill had many opponents in the anti-slavery movement. The Republican Party was formed in opposition to the act and gained in power in the aftermath of this act. The newspaper is in FAIR condition with many fold creases present, including a few mis-folds. Some tearing and tattering along some of the creases and extremities, with minor loss in a few spots. Some faint foxing and dampstaining to the paper. Minor soiling. Newspaper unopened along the top edge, with a tear in the upper center margin. Bookseller Inventory # 004649
