Pages are crisp and clean except for a tiny doodle on the back of the front free endpaper in the first volume, very light foxing at the preliminaries of the second volume and some rippling but no visible stain to the foreedge of the illustration opposite p.444, and some toning in the margins throughout; otherwise excellent, with no owners' marks. Both bindings are square and tight, the leather slightly chipped and scuffed around the corners and at the spine ends with one small chip near the heel of volume 1, otherwise clean and well-maintained; the cloth appears gently faded around the edges, but the effect is mitigated by the tidy lines of gilt stamping along the edges of the leather; overall, a really attractive set, with beautiful marbled endpapers and head edges gilded, 464+456pp., illustrated throughout with steel and wood engravings.
