First edition. Blue cloth with embossed illustration in black to the front cover. 250 pages plus 6 pages of ads. Elliot won the Pulitzer Prize-in collaboration with her sister Laura Richard-for a biography of their mother, Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist and writer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. A novel based in Newport, Rhode Island. GOOD condition. Minor to moderate soiling, mostly to the rear cover. General fading and scuffing, with heavier scuffing along the hinges and extremities. Several small areas of staining to the covers. Extremities scuffed and bumped, with fraying to the head and foot of the spine. Interior solid with minor scattered soiling, general browning to the paper and a small sticker on the first endpaper. A few pages with creasing to their lower corners. Bookseller Inventory # 004557
