About this Item

Quarto. 2 vol. set. 421, 429. index, references, illustrations. 2 letters attached (1) 1TLS, on his letterhead of law firm of Baker, Hostetler, Sidlo & Patterson, dated November 19, 1931. To Edward R. Harvey. Discussing the chaotic Presidential situation as the Depression has set in. He discusses the late Senator George Earle Chamberlain of Oregon who had passed away in 1928. Baker notes that the last time he saw Baker in Washington, D.C. he was in obvious ill health. The Senator had clearly taken a strong dislike to Baker who here feels it is because President Wilson had appointed him instead of Chamberlain as the US was about to enter World War I. Chamberlain had been preparing the Military Preparedness Bill (which finally passed in 1918) and obviously felt he was better equipped for the position than Baker. A second small 1tls to Harvey, dated June 22, 1932 explaining why he would not be in Chicago for the convention. (It is known that he had hoped that in the event that FDR was not the nominee that he would be chosen as the Democratic nominee; however, the Roosevelt Machine had already secured enough delegates to make that impossible. A beautifully matched, near fine set bound in original blue cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, sharp corners. Bookseller Inventory # 016941
