About this Item

When Dillibe Onyeama entered Eton College in January 1965, he had just passed his fourteenth birthday and he was one of 2 black boys in the school. He spent four years there, and endured all sorts of racial taunts, put-downs and harassments.( His father was a judge in Lagos Nigeria.) Even his academic integrity and ability were questioned, he was accused of homosexual practices eventhough he was reviled by them. These 239 pages describe his emotional, educational and personal journey. (His most admired successes were in boxing and cricket.) Section of b/w photos after p. 112. Names of perpetrators have been changed to protect against liablities. The last page of his book has a remarkable conclusion about the suffering of black people. Cond : Boards are charcoal coloured cloth w/ gilt lettering on spine only. End-papers are white. D.J. not price-clipped. D.J. is black with white lettering at spine and face. Cover graphic is two white eyeballs. D.J. is compl. but VERY heavily chipped along top edge, less along bottom. BOTH spines fine, except d.j. top & tail - tattered. Light soiling throughout. Volume is SQUARE. Full page photo of author on back cover d.j. . No names, marks, tears, creases, folds, nor stains. EXCELLENT reading copy of a scarce book. Giftable !! Quote (p. 102) : The other privilege, messing, was one I came to hate by the middle of my first term, after first being really impressed with the idea of it. To start with, my relationship with my two almost forgotten mess mates, Charles Coaker the mouse face, and Henry Lawrence the dreamer, became bad. We spent . .". Bookseller Inventory # 003001
