About this Item

Hardcover in black cloth lettred and decorated in yellow and blue. 286 pp. with glossary of Negro Words and Phrases. A tight, bright example. In the original dust jacket, very good or somewhat better, two small chips head of spine. Set during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, a novel of "the great black walled city" of Harlem; the protagonists are a quiet librarian and an aspiring writer who struggle against racism to keep their love for each other alive. Though an instant bestseller when it was first published in 1926, it was then and continued to be very controversial. The black community was divided over it---Langston Hughes appluded it while Countee Cullen and W.E.B. DuBois considered it an affront. Bookseller Inventory # E18032
