About this Item

448p. No jacket. Published sometime between 1852-1863, per the second edition of Howe's USiana (listing #168). Brown cloth with detailed decoration in black (a log cabin in the middle, lower border of a man aiming a rifle at a mountain lion). Titling was originally in a field of gilt, but most of the gold has rubbed away, leaving only two small strips remaining. The rear board has very heavy rubbing that looks like water damage was involved. There are also some small spots in that area that may be mold or mildew. The spine and front board are also rubbed, but this rubbing is considerably lighter, and without signs of water. Previous owner's name written twice on blank page following ffep. The pages are unusually clean and clear for their age, although they are a bit yellowed, and from time to time there may be a small fox mark. Page 147/148 has a small piece missing from the fore edge margin, which does not impact the text. The rear endpapers and the pages immediately preceeding it (from about page 442) show some water staining in the hinge gutter, which does not obscure any text. The binding is weak, although the stitching seems secure, the external spine has completely pulled away from the stitched spine, leaving the boards connected only by the endpapers (which have thankfully not split) so gentle handling is a must. Size: 8vo - over 7 3/4 in - 9 3/4 in Tall. Year: 1852. Bookseller Inventory # BBS-060989
