Presume 1st Editions, 5 volumes, dated 1872 to 1875. All volumes - quarter bound light tan calf, marbled boards dark red/blue/white, bevelled edges. Corners triangular protector bound light tan calf, with a little rubbing of the leather, just one front head corner of one volume fairly worn. Vertical spine titles gilt, on dark brown gloss leather panel. Four raised bands with single line gilt above and below raised bands, double gilt lines at head and foot. Small gilt emblem centrally between raised bands. All end papers marbled as hard covers, no inscriptions. All page edges marbled and shellaced, colours as hard covers. 11cm x 16.5cm tall. Page numbers for each volume given with individual descriptions. 'Goldsmith's Choice Works', (Nimmo. 1872), comprising his Vicar of Wakefield, Poems and Plays. 464pp. WH. Pages very clean. Frontis. b/w plate engraving of Oliver Goldsmith by William Howison Eden, tissue guarded slightly marked from the design on the following page. Facing page lavishly decorated black/gold/red/green, 'Goldsmiths's Poetical Works'. Title page bears small superb engraving by J.M.Gaeser. Prelims. have small amount of foxing in top edge margin. Front of volume contains 'Life of Oliver Goldsmith' by Thomas Finlayson, followed by Goldsmith's poems and plays. Illus. 5 exquisite b/w plate engravings, by Waterson and Corner. Frontis. b/w engraving of Lord Byron, with facsimile of his signature below portrait, tissue guarded. Title page has small b/w oval engraving, Castle of Chillon. Volume begins with 'Life of Lord Bryon' and continues with his poetical works. Illus. 10 charming b/w plate engravings by various engravers including J.M.Corner, F.Borders, and Frier. 'The Poetical Works of Thomas Campbell and Samuel T. Coleridge'. This is followed by 'Life of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, his poetical works, including the much loved 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner', and notes.
