About this Item

(BURR, AARON). CHEETHAM, James. Nine Letters on the Subject of Aaron Burr's Defection, with an Appendix. New-York: Printed by Denniston & Cheetham, 1803. 1st ed. 139pp. Orig. plain front wrapper. Disbound, gatherings loose, some light toning, else very good. HOWES C-338. Sabin 12381. Shaw & Shoemaker 3958. Cheetham, editor of the AMERICAN CITIZEN was a strong supporter of DeWitt Clinton. It was [Cheetham] who first made the suggestion in A View of the Political Conduct of Aaron Burr that Burr had not dealt honorably in his efforts to obtain the presidency in 1800. The language of the charges is vindictive, and the style pretentious and verbose"--DAB. In this work, Cheetham continues his attacks on Burr, repeating the allegations that Burr had conspired with the Federalists to defeat Jefferson and win the election for himself.
