An account of the pioneering excavations of Kuyunjik outside Mosul (later found to be the site of Nineveh) and Nimrud sites of the Assyrian civilisation. The publication of Nineveh and its Remains and the arrival of the Assyrian sculptures in the British Museum (listed in Vol. I, Appendix III) aroused much interest in London. Layard (1817-94) was feted both as an explorer and archaeologist and praised for the perceived links of Assyrian names to biblical names and events. This set is a reprint of the first edition; such was the title's popularity that three editions alone were published in 1849 and it continued to appear throughout the century in later editions. The first volume is also of value for its account of Layard's travels in Kurdistan and Mesopotamia and of the inhabitants of those regions including the Chaldean Christians.
