378 x 270 mm. Folio. x, [2], 181 pp. 8 figs., 10 engraved plates after drawings by Nitzsch, index. Original plain boards, printed paper spine label; re-backed with modern quarter cloth, rubbed. Ex library bookplate of the Boston Society of Natural History from the H. F. Wolcott Fund, received July 12, 1871 inside front cover and Digest of the library regulations mounted inside rear cover. Philip Lutley Sclater was one of the greatest British ornithologists of his time. In 1858 Sclater took a leading part in founding Ibis, the journal of the British Ornithologists' Union. He became its first editor and did so for most of the next fifty-four years. See: DSB, XII, pp. 257-258. Christian Ludwig Nitzsch (1782-1837) was a German zoologist. This work is listed in the Brit. Mus. (Nat. Hist.), III, p. 1438, translated by William Sweetland Dallas (1824-1890), and is based on two earlier works by Nitzsch, dated 1833, and 1840.
