Octavo. 2nd printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Thanks./ James Baldwin. A part of a private log book written over six years in various places and in many states of mind. It also contains Baldwin's controversial profiles of Norman Mailer, Richard Wright and Ingmar Bergan, as well as his vigorous attack on Faulkner's defense of the old South and his portrait of Harlem. Baldwin says "The question of color takes up much space in these pages," the relations between blacks and whites, the role of the negro in America and Europe and more. Bound in maroon linen backed in black cloth, spine lettering silver. Minor light rubbing to spine ends and corners. A very good copy in very good pictorial dust jacket, edges rubbed, spine ends and corners with light shipping, damp staining to underside of jacket only very lightly seen on rear panel along with a tiny edge tear.
