Noose with Which Mob Lynched Attacker--Photograph

B&W photograph of sheriff C. C. Jennings holding a rope used in a lynching in Kansas in April 1932. On verso of the photograph is an "Acme News" and "Ref. dept. Apr 23 1932 N.E.A." rubber stamp and a typed pastedown stating "KC 184723--Noose with which mob lynched attacker-- After confessing he had attacked and killed eight-year-old Dorothy Hunter, Richard Read, 53 (?), was dragged from jail in St. Francis, Kan., by an infuriated mob of farmers who took him to Achilles, Kan., and hanged him from a tree. Above photo shows Sheriff C.C. Jennings of Rawlins County, Kan., holding the rope which was used in the lynching--4/20/32." Photograph is in very good condition with light soiling, not affecting content and a ¼" tear on top edge, not affecting content; light toning and pencil marginalia on verso. ; 8" x 6".
