About this Item

Blue papered boards, white paper label with red and black titling affixed to spine and upper front corner; cover label also has a decorative design. 96 rough-cut pages, blank pages at front and rear still attached at top. "Three hundred copies of this book printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper and the type distributed in the month of March MDCCCCXII." In quite nice condition, minor age soiling, hinges intact, small tears at head of spine, interior pages clean and unmarked, no foxing. ~~ This dramatic work is based on a passage in the Frithiof Saga (circa 1300), one of the Norse Legendary sagas which depict events that took place in the 8th century, before the colonization of Iceland. The Frithiof Saga tells the story of Frithiof and Ingeborg the Fair, daughter of King Bele, and of the obstacles facing Frithiof as he tried to win her hand in marriage. Though the saga takes place in Norway, Curtis chose to set her play in Iceland. This saga also follows the form of the Poetic Edda, and Curtis provides instruction on the proper use of recitative music in order to emphasize, and not interfere with, the dialogue. ~~ This copy is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Ever Sincerely yours, Elizabeth Curtis Brenton - April 1912." At the time publication, Curtis (writer, translator, poet) was married to Rev. Cranston Brenton, which explains her signature in the inscription. Interesting (and horribly), shortly after this play appeared, Curtis's life took an ugly turn. Involuntarily institutionalized in an insane asylum by her husband with the help of two physicians, she was forced to sign a document admitting infidelity to secure her release, which her husband then used to obtain a divorce. Curtis became remarried to Frederick Ernest Holman, and filed suit against her husband, winning the case in 1914. It is thus interesting to note that so soon before her institutionalization, she employs her husband's last name in her signature, even though his last name is not included in her authorial name. This is a very nice copy of this uncommon piece of theater, even scarcer with an inscription. Bookseller Inventory # 001746
