About this Item

First American Edition (Pirated Edition). Pages 623 pp. + Publ. Ads Front & Rear.12mo. Red Publisher's Cloth. First American Edition (Pirated Edition). Trollope's Report of his visit to America early in the Civil War. Boston was full of mosquitoes and the trip back from Newport was via Attleborough, even then the seat of the jewelry industry. In discussing the causes of the war, Trollope expresses his opposition to the Abolitionists, not simply because of the damage to Britain's cotton trade, but because the Abolitionists favored complete equality of freed Blacks with Whites. Trollope considered the Blacks constitutionally inferior and suited only for servile position. The meat in restaurants was too greasy, space in hotels was wasted on Ladies' drawing rooms and their furnishings, and universal suffrage (even for men) was not to his liking. Not to mention his opposition to women's rights to full employment and equal wages. He opposes a woman's right to remain single because, if many did so, men would be deprived of their chance to marry. Covers Bruised. Else, Good. Bookseller Inventory # 7832
