About this title

Synopsis:

Describes a variety of Indian tribal ceremonies and rituals, including those for war and peace, hunting and gathering, and healing.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- These two volumes are not completely successful since the subject areas do not lend themselves well to the overview approach. Ceremonies is hampered by its efforts to be inclusive, since most of Liptak's examples are from the Southwest and Northwest. Eastern tribes are rarely mentioned, and readers may get the impression that the ceremonies largely took place among only the western tribes. Tribal Chiefs gives brief but detailed biographies of Tecumseh, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, and Wilma Mankiller, all of whom have been well treated in single volume biographies for this age group. Because governmental styles differ from tribe to tribe, the focus on ``chiefs,'' often a European-induced creation, prevents anything more than a brief mention of traditional governmental styles in the introductory chapter. Both books are illustrated with good-quality, full-color photos and reproductions of paintings, but the captions are often inaccurate and fail to mention the people they are portraying, resorting to the generic ``Indian'' label. The many series now available on specific tribes cover this cultural information much better. --Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
