About this Item

This 1903 reprint of Catlin's travels among the Indians can be quite valuable in truly good or better condition. And indeed, Volume One here, as rebound in heavy maroon cloth by the Stappenbeck Bookbindery (Bloomington, Illinois) in April of 1953, might grade good or better, save that only the eastern (and thus least useful) portion of the color fold-out map of Catlin's travels (facing page one) remains. Western (and thus most useful) portion of this map is missing. Volume Two, however, is problematic. While the volume may appear good or better from the exterior, the coated stock on which the Edinburgh publisher reproduced Catlin's drawings has grown brittle with time, with the result that many of the plates between pp. 71 and 145 are chipping at the corners and cracking away from the binding. Some have become separated entirely, and are laid in. We do NOT believe these plates can be easily reattached; they're probably grown too brittle even to be re-sewn without each receiving an individual new backing. Even the leaf bearing pp. 143-144 of the text has cracked loose and been laid in. Volume II resultantly grades "Poor to Fair." If you are likely to find it unpleasant to deal with the specified section of Volume II (covering the Camanchee, Pawnee, Kickapoo, Flathead, Nez Perces, Shawnee, etc.) in this condition, with some plates loosely inserted and crumbling, please don't order this copy. In fact, as the two volumes weigh four pounds combined, we would rather not ship this set offshore, at all (for fear of disappointing a distant buyer who may not have fully understood this serious warning.) Faint stampings to bottom page edges read "Public Library / Danville, Illinois." Otherwise the only sign of a library history here is the obvious removal of manila card holders from each front pastedown. Vol. I counts 298 pp.; Vol. II counts 302 pp., price is for the set of two, "as is," taking into account the miserable, unhappy, frustrating, not easily remedied condition of an approx. 75-page section of the second volume. (A nicer set, being the London tenth edition of 1866, is offered separately.) This set now reduced from $145. Bookseller Inventory # 003263
