About this Item

Four portfolio volumes (of 5, lacking vol.3), quarto (9¾" x 12¾") folding solander boxes of rigid, dark greenish/gray-blue linen-covered boards and flaps, gilt spine titles and cover Smithsonian emblems with dark green ribbon ties. Each box contains 80 loose plates (320 altogether, ea. 9¼" x 12¼") of full-color prints of Walcott’s life size watercolor paintings of wild flowers together with a bound softcover Contents book (raised gilt Seal on cover) with a separate page of description for each numbered plate. The plates show deep imprinting on the high-quality paper; many have Walcott’s initials printed in the lower left corners; each print is modestly numbered and with MVW 1925 in the lower left corner of the wide margin sheet (not with a plant name at the bottom center as is the case with recent commercial reprints); printed one side only of course. Volume one’s book has a two-page Foreword by Walcott, and volume five’s book has a final Index of the entire collection of 400 plates (320 present here). Excepting faint specks on a portion of volume five’s book cover and faint scratches to the back of volume five’s case, the plates, the Contents volumes and the folding portfolios are Very Fine, virtually As New. Note: The verso of the title page of volume one states "Text only for volume one reprinted 1950" indicating that this set may be one of a special 25th Anniversary Edition, re-issued by the Smithsonian, perhaps with plates and other Contents volumes left from the original 1925 edition (since The Smithsonian seems to still have some remaining in archives), now (1950) in new folding portfolios, probably in a limited edition, though there is no statement to that effect. Whatever the bibliographic details, this four volume set is still desirable and far superior to the bound reprint books, especially for possible separate display of the large, highly decorative plates. Carefully packed for safe shipping at no added cost above Standard ($4.25). USA order only please. Bookseller Inventory # J51202
