About this Item

327 p. First printing. Erskine Caldwell solicited fine American writers to contribute to a series of books he called "American Folkways," a look at the nation from a geographic but more importantly cultural viewpoint. Meridel Le Sueur, an earthy and poetic writer sometimes compared to Walt Whitman, offers a sweeping history of a region encompassing Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan Upper Peninsula and western area on the shore of Lake Michigan. Le Sueur's book was no. 13 in the series of 28. Among other authors were Hodding Carter, Wallace Stegner, and Oscar Lewis. Deep blue cloth hardcover with gilt titles on spine, very good, map endpapers. Ex-library with very little defacement: inked call number on the spine, barely noticeable; a stamp of a Canadian library on the title page; neatly inked library data on reverse of title page. No dust jacket, but the front flap is pasted on the last free endpaper. Bookseller Inventory # 022216ML
