The gaiety is unextinguished today, the irony has kept its bite, the reasoning is still sweet, the sparkle undiminished. As comedies they are irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be." -Eudora Welty "How jane Austen can write. She is a miniturist, but never two-dimensional. All jane Austen charcaters are ready for an extended life, for a life which the scheme of her books seldom requires them to lead, and that is why they lead their actual lives so satifactorily. -E.M. Austen, Jane

Book Description Oxford at the Clarendon Press, Great Britain, 1946. Green Boards. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Third Edition. 1946. Third edition, fourth impression. 12mo. sized. A very good, complete set of these novels by Jane Austen in five volumes in original publisher's green cloth gilt embossed to the spines. No d/j. Gilt embossed lettering to the spines. B/W frontispieces to each volume. A few other b/w illustrative plates support the text of the novels. This set rather unusual in that it was given out as a prize set on behalf of what appears to be Glasgow University. Their crest embossed to the front boards of each volume and a prize bookplate pasted to each volume (the set was awarded to a Virginia M. Bowman. No other inscriptions. The slightest of rubbing to the heads of some of the volumes. Three fly spots (?) to the spine of Emma. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion is slightly more faded to the spine than the other volumes but in no way is it heavy fading and the other volumes seem to be entirely free from fading (a certain advantage of them originating from west Scotland!). Some spotting to the fore-edges - most notable to the upper fore-edge and to Mansfield Park & Northanger Abbey/Persuasion volumes. The boards have a few other marks on them - nothing much. A very good, essentially very clean, tight set. Shipping from the UK. Seller Inventory # 237814

Book Description At the Clarendon Press., Oxford, 1933. FIVE VOLUMES. 8vo. 5.75 x 7.5 inches. Vol. I, [4] + xiv + [2] + 429 + [1] pp. I.; Vol. II, xiil + [1] + 415 + [1] pp.; Vol. III, xii + [2] + 567 + [1] pp.; Vol. IV, xi + [iii] +521 + [2] pp.; Vol. V, xiii + [i] + 252 + 310 + [2] pp., including Addenda (the 2 titles separately paginated). Vols. I-IV also include 3 separate reproduction title pages of original editions (in the case of Vol. III, 4 title pages, one for first and 3 for second editions) and for Vol. V, the 4 separate title pages of the original 1818 joint edition. Bound in original red half morocco, gilt, over red cloth; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt borders and titles. All edges gilt. Binder's stamp of Bumpus on rear pastedown. Slight traces of wear to extremities but otherwise a fine set. Illustrated by 42 pages of plates, including frontispieces, and by reproductions of title pages. The five volume set produced by the Oxford University Press, is one of the best editions of the novels of Jane Austin ever issued. The inclusion of reproductions of the original title-pages to the first editions, together with the scholarly notes, appendices and indexes, and the carefully chosen contemporary illustrations complement the definitive text. A revised version of the 1923 Oxford edition edited by Robert William Chapman, scholar and editor (1881-1960), with unacknowledged assistance from his wife. Chapman became Secretary of the Clarendon Press and later edited the letters of Samuel Johnson. The combination of text and an attractive binding by John and Edward Bumpus of London, has resulted in a most desirable library set. ART / LITERATURE NOVELS LIT. FICTION 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED FINE BINDING ART / LITERATURE. Seller Inventory # 24605
