About this Item

Rebound around 1910 in plain blue cloth, with a gilt lettered spine. Very clean with well attached covers, and having very good, unworn edges. There are an original frontpaper and endpaper, with the binder adding 2 newer endpapers. xii, 364 generally very clean, still crisp and tightly bound pages, but with some foxing. There is a light waterstain to the bottom center of half of the pages' blank margins surrounding the inner hinge. 3 leaves lack a blank corner. Has both fold-out maps in very good, crisp condition. The original frontpaper is inscribed: "A. (Alexander) H. Everett Esq. / with the author's / respects." The inner cover has the bookplate of Edward Everett, to whom the author has dedicated the book. Edward Everett, orator, Mass. Governor, and President of Harvard, was the brother of Alexander Everett, who taught at Phillips Exeter, and was later in the diplomatic service with John Quincy Adams. An early owner has pencilled a comment that Alexander was the father of Edward Everett, but he was his elder brother by 2 years. The book came from the library of Amos Tuck French, with his bookplate. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 16146
