Book Description None Stated, 1695. Paperback. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Engraved topographical map of Northumberland. 1695 date shown faintly in the title cartouche. Overall measures 15.75" wide x 18 " high. Engraved size 14" x 16.5". Edges are heavily chipped with a few small closed edge tears and four half to one inch tears; two of which enter the map area. Vertical and horizontal folds to get this size map to fit the book it was lifted from. Margins are uneven with plate mark evident. Scales of latitude and longitude and minutes of time drawn just inside the borders. Topographical features include mountains, forests, woods, rivers, fenced parks, church-like symbols, roads, streets, with the coastline hatched. The title and author are shown in a cartouche at upper left. Three ten-mile scales below the cartouche. Note: Sold by Abel Swale Awnsham & John Churchil at lower right. The map is NOT COLORED. Remnant of the paper hinge that formerly mounted the map in a book is attached along the rear of the vertical centerfold. (code: NHS (?)). Map. Seller Inventory # 005119

Book Description 1695. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. London, c.1695. Original colour. 420 x 360mm. Binding folds flattened, a few small cracks in folds. A map of Northumberland but also showing Cumberland in order to show the length of Hadrian's Wall from Newcastle to the Solway Firth. Marked with castellations, it is named 'The Wall of the Picts' and 'Vallum Severi', refering to Septimus Severus, who refortified the wall c.210, after the failure of the Antonine Wall further north. The map was drawn up by Robert Morden illustrate Gibson s edition of William Camden s 'Britannia', first published in 1695. However this example comes from a different source: it is printed on much thicker paper than usual and has been folded for binding into a small format book. Seller Inventory # 17722
