Probable second edition. 408 pages. Very rare, preceding Uncle Tom's Cabin by over two decades. It deals directly with the question of slavery in 1852. Author Hale also wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and was the driving force behind President Lincoln declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday. Includes black and white illustrations. Missing title page. Embossed boards have signs of considerable age and wear. Spine ends, corner tips and some edges are somewhat eroded. Gilt title on spine good.
