About this title

Synopsis:

Expecting her new stepmother to be mean, ugly, and horrible, Hessie is surprised and confused to find her not wicked at all.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3A compactly-written story about a little girl meeting her stepmother for the first time. Hessie is to spend the summer with her father and his new wife. She is certain that Molly will be ``wicked, mean, and VERY ugly'' and so decides to behave accordingly. However, no one seems to notice the horrible faces she makes, or that she does not eat her supper that first night at the lakeside cottage. The adults show patience and understanding, eventually easing her confusion and reaffirming her rightful niche in the scheme of things. She ends her summer by assuring the lake, the ducks, and the house that she will see them all again next year. Pastel watercolor illustrations are two-dimensional and drawn in a cartoon-like manner. There is whimsical expression throughout, conveying each nuance of the well constructed storyline and smooth text. For parents and young children experiencing the traumas of divorce, this is a choice bit of readingtogether or alone. Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, Ohio
