About this title

The articles in this three-volume set originally appeared in Critical Survey of Long Fiction, English Language Series: Revised Edition (1991), with an added ten new articles, and the remainder of the entries updated by additional discussion of new works or updated bibliographic and biographic materials. Presented here are 120 19th- and 20th-century American novelists from Hawthorne, Melville, Alcott, and Twain, to Le Guin, Cheever, Anaya, DeLillo, and Morrison. Each entry includes the author's dates and places of birth and death, a b&w photo (often), and text divided into the following concise subsections: principal long fiction, other literary forms, achievements, biography, general analysis, individual analysis of the author's major works, a brief listing (title and date) of other major works, and a short bibliography of critical material. Novelists garner more words if they have a prodigious output, not because of their purported importance to literature for example, Mailer's entry is about 13,000 words while Melville's is 4,000. Three reference features include a glossary of terms and techniques, a chronological list of authors, and an index. Most of the numerous contributors are associated with colleges and universities, but credentials are not listed. Unlike the usually larger format reference books of this kind, these books are 6x9<">.
